9v adapter

I'm putting this on here since the SOO site is down. At that site they said that you could make your own 9v adapter instead of the smart parts batt. Well i did this a while ago, and now i forgot if u have to use new 9v batt, or a dead revolution batt... if i used a new 9v will it like blow the board?
