SMART CORPS CROWNED SPPL 08 CHAMPS Smart Parts
For the third consecutive season, the Smart Corps Factory Team has earned the rank of Scenario Players Paintball World Champions.
Loyalhanna, PA – November 21, 2008 - The Scenario Player's Paintball League has become the premiere battleground for paintball teams to test their mettle in a scenario style competition. Two-thousand and eight marked the league's fourth season combining old-school woods paintball tournaments with modern scenario twists.
For the 2008 season, the SPPL began dividing the competition into divisions based on skill and experience, giving the younger teams a taste of success as well. Over the season 21 teams competed in the Rookie Division, 29 as Masters, and 12 in the top ranked Elite division. An additional 11 teams competed in the affiliated Canadian Scenario Paintball Players League.
By playing at qualifier events across the country (9 in the US, 4 in Canada) teams were able to earn series ranking points for the league's finale event, the SPPL World Championship held at Low Country Paintball in Georgia on October 11th through 12th.
Top ranked Smart Corps started out the competition with a preliminary round victory 145 to 6 victory over the Black and Blue Crew. Next Forest Fire delivered the Smart Corps Factory team their first SPPL loss, by managing to get behind the Smart Corps players, finishing them off 106 to 102. Dan Bonebrake's Forest Demons also stood between the Smart Corps and the trophy, by defeating them 128 to 67, through control of the crucial swing base.
As the tournament moved into the semifinals, the Black And Blue Crew volunteered to add to the competition's referee staff while the Smart Corps again faced Forest Fire. Ready for Forest Fire's back-door maneuver, the Smart Corps factory team won the round 157 to 63, heading to the finals.
The final round pitted the Smart Corps against Forest Demons, where Smart Corps team member, Dave Cilio, pushed the Demons out of the Swing Base area with a rocket launcher, taking out the majority of the team in the first few minutes of the game. This allowed the Corps members to get into the base, an easily defensible spot. With the game finishing 124 to 67, the Smart Corps Factory team was crowned as the SPPL's 2008 World Champions and Series Champions.
“It's been another fantastic season in the SPPL,” said Smart Corps Factory Team Captain Sean Scott, “At every event, we face better and better competition, but off the field, it's camaraderie and good times. Failure to Flatline and Black Eagle Squadron both loaned us rocket launchers for the finals and the alternative weaponry helped out.”
Scott credits a portion of the team's win to its equipment. “Obviously a paintgun doesn't play the game for you, but when you have consistency, accuracy and quiet shooting shot after shot, that's an edge. We've rotated the paintguns we use on the field, and our SP-1s have gotten a lot of use. It may sound cliché to quote our company motto, but it's true – equipment counts.”
“All the work Jayson Nielson and the SPPL crew put in all season,” says Scott, “was matched by the hospitality of Billy Smith and his staff at Low Country Paintball, as well as the friendship and competition of all the other teams. It was the perfect end to a great season, we'll definitely be back in 2009 to defend our title.”
