A5 End-Cap Recall
March, 2009

In conjunction with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Tippmann Sports, LLC, has issued a voluntary recall for the end-caps of about 1300 A5 markers sold within the last year.

The end cap retains the mainspring and internals of the A5, and has to deal with a fair amount of force. When the marker fires, gas pressure drives its hammer (rear bolt in Tippmann lingo) to compress the mainspring against the rear cap. Since the rear cap also holds a sling attachment point it undergoes pulling stresses in the same direction when used with a sling.

According to the CPSC, there have been three reported failures of the affected rear caps, one of which caused a minor injury. As a result Tippmann is advising players with affected markers to stop using them until the cap can be replaced with a newer style non-swiveling end cap. Tippmann is providing the newer caps, and detailed installation instructions to its customers free of charge.

The A5 markers with the recalled end caps have serial numbers ranging from 0409301 to 0422200, most of these markers would have been sold by retail stores between May of 2008 and February of 2009. The A5's serial number can be found stamped into its left receiver half, on the lower edge, opposite the Cyclone Feed mechanism.

Other model Tippmann markers, A5's with higher or lower serial numbers, or A5s within this serial number range that already have the all-polymer non-swiveling end cap are not affected by the recall. A5s with an R stamped next to the serial number already have the newer non-swiveling end-cap installed and are not affected by the recall.

Owners of A5s with the swiveling end caps within the affected serial number range are advised to stop using them and contact Tippmann for their free replacement end-cap and installation instructions. Further details, and online ordering of the replacement end-cap are available on the web page that Tippmann has set up to handle the recall - www.tippmann.com/recall. Additional information may be obtained by calling Tippmann Sports, Inc. toll-free at (866) 841-3029 between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or e-mailing them at recall@tippmann.com
