Paintball Warrior
A book by R. Thom
Review By Bill Mills - July 2005

Paintball Warrior is an 87 page book which not only describes the sport of paintball, but what is needed to improve one’s game as well.

The book starts with an introduction describing the game and telling first time players what they can expect to happen at the field, and how to deal with rental equipment – things that usually one doesn’t see in books on improving the game.

Paintball Warrior goes on to discuss the fundamentals of playing the game, including basic shooting, arcing the ball to reach distant targets, and snap shooting – popping out from behind cover to take a quick shot, then returning to its protection.  While author Rick Thom is an experienced player, he also reaches out to those with even more experience in certain areas.  For example, following the sections on shooting, using cover, playing the bunker and communicating, Thom includes an interview with Marty Bush, one of the old school Ironmen, and arguably one of the most famous snap-shooters of professional paintball in the late 90s and turn of the century.  Bush’s e-mail address and phone number are even included, in case the reader has more questions.

Thom goes further into more intermediate skills covering how to post on an opponent, keeping them tucked in, moving while being fired upon, shooting while moving, and shooting players who are moving as well as leading fire ahead of a moving player and communicating in code to share tactics with only your team.

Each strategy covered is discussed with example drills and diagrams to not only learn concept behind the skill, but to allow the reader to train and apply it in the game.  Additional chapters deal with more specific situations like bunkering, double bunkering, closing, setting up a defense, and even applying these game skills in the woods, not just on concept fields.  Interviews are also included with Eric Roberts, Chris LaSoya, Shane Pestana and Oh Pawlak.

Paintball Warrior is published by Paintball Warrior Publications, 1135 Makawao Ave #103, PMB 201 Makawao, Hawaii 96768.
