The 1997 NPPL Las Vegas Desert Open

This year the NPPL Las Vegas tournament joined forces with the Great Western Tournament Series to hold two tournaments the same weekend in the same location. For the Novice and Amateur 5 man teams in the Great Western, this meant a chance to meet and learn from the Amateur and Pro 10 man teams competing in the NPPL event. While some teams fielded squads in both events, most were not so daring.

This year's event was produced by Dave Youngblood, of DYE products. While the desert location left a bit to be desired (it was hot, dusty and remote) it provided excellent fields, many of which were visible from bleachers placed on the edge of the parking area. By the second day of the event, hourly dousing from water trucks had reduced the dust problems in the staging areas drastically. The referees did an outstanding job, staying on top of the players and taking many welts in the process.

Looking in the scores you will see the name Ironmen, and may be wondering "which Ironmen?" Since Bob Long left the original Team Ironmen in the fall of 1996, he has put together a new team, which is being referred to as "Bob Long's Ironmen". Bob Long's Ironmen turned pro, and placed, during this event. The members of the original Team Ironmen are not out of the running - they didn't compete in this tournament because they were referees.

What do all these numbers mean?

Listed below are the scores for the Amateur and Pro 10 man teams. First, the total scores for each team's preliminary round games are listed. Those which went on the the semi-finals include ranking. The schedules of the semi-final and final rounds are listed to indicate who played who. Then the listings for the semi-finals are listed. The semifinal scores, like the final scores, have a first number, indicating the score for that game, and the second number (after the slash) is the total score up to that point. Negative numbers in parentheses indicate penalty points assessed.
