It is only expensive if you purchase an entire airbag. We are only interested in the inflation module. This is the package that contains the chemicals and the electrodes to start the reaction. The most expensive portion of the air bag is not the inflation module, but the control module. The control module contains computers and mechanical devices to tell the air bag when to deploy and when not to deploy. For this, we have the person manning the gun. The control module is expensive, and there are other parts, like the mountings, the actual air bag, and the cover, all of which we replace with PVC pipe in the form of the gun. If you only pay for the inflation module, you are looking at a very low cost part.

The problem is that being interested in paintball tanks, I am not part of the general public. The only use most people have for air bag inflators is in their car's airbags. As such, I have found it difficult to find someone who sells just the inflation module. Of course, if anyone has any ideas on this front, I would be interested.
