: You seem to know quite a bit about chemestry. Are you in a related profesion? Are there any other chemical reactions that we could use that would be fast enough to make a "shell"? But safer?

I am actually a biologist by trade. The reactions I am thinking about come from various sources, mostly the internet. I like this airbag idea. The carbine cannon is likely to work well, but everyone received it poorly. I would like to use one just for effect. It makes an impressive noise and has a mussle flash! Even if it was not propelling paintballs, I think it would be cool. Most other reactions use or generate toxic chemicals. I do think the airbag thing is viable. A similar idea would be model rocket engines. These generate nitrogen using lead azide. Lead is far less reactive than sodium and lead azide is less toxic than sodium azide. However, lead azide is more stable than sodium azide and requires an oxidizer. When a sufficient oxidizer is provided, lead azide is a potent explosive. In general, I would regard model rocket engines as safe, but the concept of explosives was not well received. In my opinion, the calcium carbide and water reaction would be safer than a model rocket engine.

I am trying to contact four different manufactures of airbag inflators about purchase. These actually show the most promise for a "shell". I hope to know more about the cost soon.
