I don't know about the average rate, but I get about 3 shots per second using unregulated CO2. My resevoir is 9/16 diameter, and 5" long.

I found that pet screen works well. It's fiberglass window screen designed to take the abuse that a dog's claws might dish out. It can be found at most lumber yards.
