: I like your post quite a bit. : I have shot real firearms. I own real firearms. I have no particular desire to shoot real firearms at any living creature, and am not sure if I could sleep at night having fired at a real human being. : With that said, I love paintball. I don't look at it as a war simulation, I look at it as a friendly contest of skill, speed, indensity, daring and strategy. I don't "hate" the people I elimiate or those who eliminate me. Therefore I don't feel the need to have semi-acurate representations or real firearms in paintball. : War and paintball are seperate in my mind. Maybe it isn't for some people. But I am happy with my bright blue angel with big tank that doesn't look like a real gun. It looks like what it is supposed to be. An instrument of enjoyment. These ramblings are not likely to be very coherent, but maybe I'll get to a reasonable bottom line. First, I do understand that there is some appeal to the "real" looking paintguns. There are, however, several problems with this. I must admit that I've played some outlaw ball in my time (I have stopped doing this, and do not endorse it, by the way), playing on unoccupied public or private land. I would hate to see what happens if anyone got the wrong idea about that. If I'm approached by a police officer who has been called to see what we're up to, I'd much rather he see clearly that I'm carrying a paintball marker, without the possibility (or intent, for that matter) that what I'm carrying looks like an M16. My pretty, black to red faded Dark Cocker is basically unmistakable as something other than a live firearm. Also, it is in the simple interest in safety that I could understand a field owner's objection to a marker that looks real enough for someone to need to ask. Live arms are prohibited on most of the fields I've been to, and it's easier for a field owner to object to anything that looks so much like one than to go about checking. Maybe I'm being silly. Maybe we can all assume that no one is seriously going to bring live arms onto the field. Call me scared if you want, but I'm also the type of guy who likes to be sure that my opponents are shooting markers that do not "look, feel, and sound like military guns." Please don't get me wrong. I'm not denouncing all of the value of markers like these. They are great for SWAT and armed forces training, as they are great replicas for close-quarters scenarios. They also have riot control value. I saw a program on tv that depicted the use of an AT marker with an extremely stinky ammo, intended to break up crowds. Wonderful idea. I guess the bottom line is that I don't see the AT's becoming dominant in the market for paintguns. Most (I can't say "all") paintball players have no desire to be soldiers. Most of the players I know will intentionally distance themselves from the concept in order to make that clear. I'd assume that most field owners would rather be able to tell a marker from a live arm by sight alone. Some of you guys who have AT's might be able to ping back about whether you've ever taken any flack from a field owner about the look of your marker. I don't know. Regardless, I'm sure they're lots of fun, and from what I have heard, I'd probably like to get the chance to fool around with one. The belt-fed system seems like a great idea for the rate of fire that tournament players are going for these days. Feel free to reply opinions and experiences.
