Ask around at your local field for recommendations.
It is best to buy locally so that you can go back for support. It costs a little more up front, but it's worth it, especially for a Newbie.

Avoid the major chains: Dick's, Sports Authority, etc. Go to a small, paintball specific shop. They are more likely to negotiate a lower price.
See if they will match the internet price; or bring an ad from a magazine (APG). I was able to get a substantial discount this way. I paid $10 more than internet, but I didn't have to pay for shipping, and I had someone to go to if there were any problems (there weren't).
