@@@ If you can only get one insert for now then it's better to shoot through an insert that is slightly larger than what you need than too tight. Too large will be less gas efficient, but too tight you'll break balls left and right. What's the lesser of 2 evils? What brand of paint are you reffering to? If the paint says the largest diameter is up to .691, than the .691 insert should be fine. From there, as you can afford to, get the next size up and the next size down.

You should be able to blow the paint through the insert like a blowgun. If you can't the insert's too small. If the paint rolls clear through the insert's too large.
