I started to reply to this but it got to be too complicated. So I started over hopefully this makes sense. Projectiles aren't as simple as your taught in physics. A lot of things come into play, just to keep it short and easy here are a few:
Drag (size/speed both have a positive 1:1 effect) So the larger the ball the more the air pushes back to give less distance. While putting more speed into the ball would give it a farther distance, it also gives it more force forcing a larger pressure to be used in the gun for the launching of the ball. Making it bigger would also by nature cause it to weigh more, and even if the speed where to be kept the same this gives the object much more momentum and a larger load when it hits a person (area times pressure equals load) If you've ever heard of less then lethal ammunition it is stuff cops use in riot control (bean bags in shotguns, rubber bullets ect). They shoot around 250-300 fps (paintball ranges) and they drop people hard. While the weight of the ball wouldn't be as great as the ammo, you probley see the point. We're not out to hurt anyone. Paint leaves good brusies and welts as it is. I'll stop here before I get too confusing. Basicly there are many reasons why the size is what it is.
