Glad to hear there's still pumpers around! It's still the best game in town for the buck, I think.
I had a deep conversation with a field owner last night about some of my concerns and issues. He'd had a kid bring his electro-whatever over a week ago, throw a HALO loader on top, set it to 20 bps, and proceed to give a firepower demonstration. The field owner said it was scary. We both could imagine getting bunkered by that, and how much it would really suck. Meanwhile, the group I reffed had a guy take some close shots from 3 different sides (last guy left in a hyperball game). 3 shooters... the poor guy took about a dozen or so hits. Now imagine THAT at 20 bps EACH, instead of, say, 8. The injury potential is enormous there, but nobody who's got that sort of gear seems to want to hear "slow down".
Along the way, we discussed the SL-68III concept. Talking to a businessman about it was enlightening, if not totally encouraging. I don't forsee Tippmann actually going to production with an SL-III, but maybe we can work around that. We also fixed one poor guy's SL-68II, which had been slightly incorrectly reassembled. Springs just gotta be in the right places :)
On a brighter note, my group of first-time-players took on some pretty seasoned game vets. The group was there for a bachelor party, and the vets were there partially to practice for a tournament. It was 8 group players against 5 vets. In hyperball, the vets won consistantly. But in the woods, the newbies TOOK APART the vets, every time. It was really a neat thing to see.
I've said before that the future of the sport is going to see some changes, and some of those will include going BACK to how things used to be. The average modern tournament player does NOT like woods games. Perhaps some tournaments will recognize the added challenge of playing woods, and move at least some phases of tournaments back to the woods, simply to weed out those who can't adapt. Funny words, I know, coming from a guy who can't relegate a decade-old Tippmann pump to the closet in favor of a battery-powered marker.
And now, GAME INFO!
September 21, there will be a pump only game at Stalker Paintball in Wisconsin. Contact me through my site if you're interested!
