I am not a hard-core tournament player either - I did practice awhile on a 10-man NPPL team, and I own a field.

If you are playing mixed pump/semi speedball, your pumpers should be playing mid or front. It is those positions where the opportunity for a sneak shot is at its greatest. A guy with a stock-class marker (no hopper) and the ability to make silent, quick, hopefully unseen, moves will only need a shot or two in a flanking situation.

In general, in speedball, the biggest mistake I see players make in a bunker situation is firing too early. Many times a player will make a move, completely undetected, and instead of easing in and making a shot, they shoot, then run in! Even with a fast semi, that generally results in a miss, or at best one-for-one. Never shoot if you have the choice of shooting from an undetected spot or moving to another, closer, undetected spot. For a pumper, especially in a mixed game, making that first shot count is most important.
