Herein lies the problem with all of the designs previously mentioned...they do not take into account the fact that the majority of the gas (therefore sound) exits through the end of the barrel, not the ports (this can be proven by measuring the area of the opening in the end of the barrel, then comparing that to the area of the ports). Thus, we must find a way to slow down the air as it is leaving the end of the barrel as well...

This can be accomplished somewhat effectivly by getting dense, OPEN CELL (this means that you can blow air through it) foam, and cutting it about 3" past the end of the barrel. Then, using a very sharp razor blade, taper the excess foam so that it never comes in contact with the ball as it is travelling through the contraption. This should absorb MOST of the sound emitted from the barrel...

The container in which the foam is placed is also of the utmost importance. Do not, under any circumstances, use a metal tube (unless it is lead). This is because as the soundwaves travel through the foam, they slow down, but do not stop, and still retain energy. When they hit the metal tube, they vibrate it, causing it to ping. Cardboard tube (preferably 3/8" thick or more) is ideal. The same can be said of the endcaps. The rear endcap can be the same diameter as the barrel, but the front one needs to be significantly larger in diameter. It should not, however, be left open!

I hope this helps....

See ya in my crosshairs

Steve
