heres a few things I tell new players fairly often

ever play with rolled up towels when you were a kid? you know, roll em up then snap em at each other? a hit from a paintball kind of feels like that little snap, stings a bit and goes away feeling wise pretty quick. Close range shots can hurt a little, but generally its like being hit in dodge ball. The real fear factor on hits comes from the appearance of "welts" after a paintball hit. They look worse than they feel. Welts typically last about a week visually - but generally only hurt for the first few minutes after you get hit. After those minutes you dont even know they are there til you look at them.

Field safety is always important - generally look for the following

Chrony speed limits - 300 and below are normal and have been fairly safe for years. Local fields in my area run at about 280 - 285.

Surrender options - as mentioned earlier - a nice way to prevent close range shots.

good reffing - people working the field assigned to keep things fair and safe.

I recommend the following for safety

1) A good thermal lense mask - thermal lenses reduce fogging (condensation on the lense) allowing clearer vision. A good mask will also provide hard protection for front of face and ears.

2) for a boy - athletic supporter aka the cup

3) knee and elbow pads if he likes to run and slide and dive

4) long sleeve jersey and pants that can take the running and sliding etc...

its always a good idea to check out your local fields before playing. Look for professional conduct, safety considerations, and see how games play out.

and remember to understand mask on and barrel plug rules!!

have fun out there

Jasleth
