Depends where/how you play. ASTM is a voluntary organization of industry members (covers MANY other things besides paintball) who set voluntary standards to promote the given industry. The standards for Masks, paintballs, tank threads, burst disks and field saftey operation are set by this commite. They are THE commite when it comes to safety standards and compatability (like with the tank threads). Many insurance companies require ASTM compliance to issue insurance at a field. So most fields (any that I have ever been too) and tournaments do not allow anything other than semi-automatic only. Thus the only thing I could do with full auto would be to paint trees in my back yard or play renegade ball, neither of which I do, nor would I buy a $1400 marker for. If you think that this all of the sudden makes WDP inferrior to tippman and kingman produced markers, well you are entitled to your opinion. WDP is just being proactive. With the locked modes, encapsulated pcb and encrypted software, fields/tourneys don't even need to worry about compliance/ tampering/ cheating. They are being proactive and responsible. Who knows what ASTM or legislation will specify down the road. As for the high numbers of tippmans and spyders, well, YEAH. Most stores sell probably 20 blowbacks for every angel. Probably more than that. The are affordable, have reasonable performance, and for the guy on a budget, or who plays once every two months, or who is starting out, or is just recballing or renegade balling they are the perfect answer. I personally don't care that much about firing modes. I just want my IR3 out of shipping limbo and in my hands!
