then you try a wrench to loosen it.

99.9% of attempts give you a nut in your hand and the cocking rod still firmly attached to the hammer.

Find a small standard size nut (6/32 ?) and thread it on to the end of the threads finger tight. Then screw the cocking rod back on finger tight. The with TWO wrenches. Hold the cocking rod STILL and with the other wrench turn the small screw counterclockwise until it jams firmly against the cocking rod. The using ONLY the nut on the standard screw, turn it counter clockwise. It will only tighten against the cocking nut and something has to five. Pop! the cocking rod comes loose.
