With My old cocker I could set it up to almost perfect timing without gas, mostly because I would count threads before pulling it apart. However, I still needed to fine tune it a bit afterwards. You can get close in timing without, but you will need to fine tune it before you take it out to play. As for the timing with the hinge, alot of times when I help a guy put one on, they almost leave it where it's at. It won't have alot of ball suck (atleast from my past experiences) but blow back will be minimal. A little tuning and ball suck is easy to achieve
