according to some airsmiths, the spring actually does very little unless you're going LP. The spring does ensure that the valve closes, but it's the back pressure in the air chamber which will determine how much the valve opens.
I don't disbelieve this, as I've never seen a very large range of FPS change from just changing the valve spring. At least not in the lower tensions and in a LP set up.
Most of the people from the hard everyday world of PB, besides those selling LP items, seem to believe that LP = lousy gas mileage.
375psi seems to be the number I hear as the input to use.
