They are used interchangably in the sport.

The cocker 3 way is, in some engineering circles a 4 way. The difference being that the '4th way' is the vent to the atmosphere which doesn't have a barb or hose attached.

It is technically a 4 way valve with 3 ports and a vent...

We are all still confused.. So while we are at it:

An ANS '3 way' has side hole vents and 3 barbed ports.

The Kapp '3way' vents front and back of the valve body with 3 barbed ports.

Lets just say they are 4 ways that have a very specialized application design.
