A little Blue Loctite can be used. If you get any in the detent ball, you just screwed yourself.
Ditto Teflon Tape which could also be used.
If you have to back a OEM detent out to keep it from hanging your bolt or cutting balls, it is a manufacturers defect and a warrenty repair / replacement item. Marker and/or detent.
A shim under the detent head would allow you to seat it down while backing it off a little. Don't screw up your finnish and void your warrenty.
