Tightening the cocking rod with a tool is BAD.

Something we ALL have done and figured out why we shouldn't do it.

When you have to use the same tool to unscrew it, the cocking rod nut comes loose and off the cocking rod.

Then you can't remove the cocking rod without a LOT of hassle and burgering up the finnish on the cocking rod sufficiently to require replacement.

If you discover this next time you try to chrono, have a couple of nuts with the same thread. Thread them onto the cocking rod and use two wrenches to jam and tighten them against each other. Then put a wrench on the one towards the front of the marker and tighten it against the one in the back. Since it can't, the cocking rod pops loose and you can screw it out.

The CHEAP FIX is to put a 1/8" piece of pneumatic hose in the hammer hole and finger tighten the cocking rod into it. The downside is you have to HOLD your marker down at ALL TIMES when you have the cocking rod out or take a chance, it might fall out and be inside your marker causing problems.

The CURE for the cocking rod backing out is a NEW hammer that has 2 nylon set screws installed to hold both the sear lug and cocking rod into position and to prevent any creeping of the sear lug or the cocking rod from comming loose.

I made the mistake of using a tool, figured the repair fix but skipped the vice grip and scratched up cocking rod mistake. Then went the CHEAP FIX route (everybody knows I'm CHEAP), and then got the hammer.

Haven't had to think about that problem since.
