They ARE TIGHT! If you try a standard socket and round off the corners, you are screwed..... It is a permanent fixture short of taking it to a machine shop.

Haul it up to the local hardware store and get a 12 point that is designed to fit it. Mine was about $7. Cheap considering the consequences. I didn't reinstall it so tight so I CAN use a standard socket now. A little blue Loctite and it has been there for two years.
