It is NOT unusual for the grip screw to extend into the receiver. That would ruin the velocity screw on removal like you described and create interference problems on the new velocity screw install. See if you can get lucky and just remove or loosed the grip screw and see if that new velocity screw just slides right in like it should... Been there, done that myself....
