WARNING: I've not tried what I'm about to say, so take it for what it's worth.

If this fixes the problem, if you can modify your valve so that the solenoid bleeds to the outside rather than the downstream pipe, you should be able to go back to the tighter pipe. Also note that doing so should allow your vavle to open quicker.
