A few reasons.

First, generally speaking the price disparity from a product at wallmart and the same product at K-mart isn't much. Even with high dollar items. Combine that with the fact that they advertise their prices. Generally this leads to people either A) not caring about the $10 extra on a $700 TV or B) caring about the $10 and going to the store that advertised for cheaper and never going to the more expensive store.

With paintball there are HUGE price variances over the same item. I've seen as much as 200% differences. And very rarely are the prices clearly market, let alone advertised.

Another reason is the demographic. You're target market is generally young males. They generally don't have well paying jobs so they have to make every penny count. A thousand dollars worth of equipment is a big purchase for most people, let alone a teenage kid who works after school and the weekends. They want the best deal possible.

Now I'm going to go on a quick rant.
I am 100% for supporting the local shops. I used to buy stuff from my proshops at higher prices because I want to support the locals. Right now I'll buy from ONE shop in the state of colorado.
Why won't I buy from other stores? Let me tell you. I'm sick of the inane drivel that some shop owners tell unsuspecting customers. I'm sick of owners who think brand X paintball gun can defy the laws of physics. I'm sick of being openly mocked for the marker I carry. I'm sick of the same shop owners complaining when I buy a tank or reg from an online store. Hey if you want a customer's money maybe try some service. Now I'm not saying your store is like this, but a lot are. And the stores that are SHOULD go out of business, they're giving the sport a bad name. End rant.
