Thanks for the speedy diagnosis. I opened the gun, and, sure 'nuff, the spring was missing! Judging from the sticky substance I had removed from the gun's elbow, it looks like the previous owner lost it. Now I am wondering if I am missing any O-rings; the manual's technical drawings are decidedly unhelpful in this regard. (in my opinion)

: If the tank leakes when it is off the gun, then you have a valve problem, dirt in it or something, and it has nothing to do with the 98.

Cool. Though, I didn't remove it according to the instruction manual, so I bet the pin didn't close.
