Thnaks for the thoughts Bill. Let me follow up with some more...

If I test a small section of the gun, and the new paint does not react badly to the old, am I okay to paint over it and skip the stripping step? I want some black in the new design so I thought I woudl just leave the black parts black from the original paint. Is this a shortcut I will regret in the future or is it okay if the paint settles okay?
