That was a good question that I hadn't considered. My tank uses paintball netting. I don't think you could throw a shotput through that stuff, but I heard that some people use window screen. I had some aluminum screen so I hooked it up to a frame. For reference I used my paintball gun set to 285 fps full auto at 9 rounds per second. I used big ball paintballs. Every shot from the first burst went right through! I didn't see any reason to test any more. I assume you guys are using something different.
