I have 2 suggestions for a rear engine PAY.

Start with an old VW beetle. It is rear engine rear wheel drive.

Or start with a front engine, front wheel drive solid axle vehicle. Then flip the drive axle upside-down. The former forward gears will then drive the vehicle in the other direction. Thus driving forwards, the engine would be in the rear. I can not take credit for this idea though, I saw it work on Junk Yard Wars.

The problem with this is steering. The only work-arounds I can think of would be to use axles off of a second vehicle. I hope you have a good junk yard nearby.
