A/C cocking rod stuck!

Apparently i accidentally tightened the cocking rod on my autococker too much. Now, when i try to remove it, the endpiece just unscrews. I've tried using a wrench on the rod itself, tightening the set screw more, and even locktight but it just keeps coming apart. Any suggestions?
